Independent Fire Testing: Sapphire Flame Retardant
Our non-brominated flame retardant has now been independently tested twice — decades apart — with consistent results.
SANS 10177-9
Cotton fabric (240 gsm) treated with Sapphire Flame Retardant:
• Self-extinguished within 24 seconds of flame removal
• Zero flame spread
• Only 250mm of localized heat/char damage, contained to the flame contact area
• Heat contribution of just 0.63°C/min over a 10-minute exposure
1973 | National Building Research Institute (CSIR)
Earlier testing on treated vs. untreated textiles found:
• Markedly reduced flammability across all treated materials
• No burning droplets on treated synthetics (a known hazard in untreated fabrics)
• Flame resistance maintained through up to 5 dry-cleaning cycles
As a non-brominated chemistry, Sapphire achieves this without the toxic combustion byproducts (dioxins, furans, corrosive gases) associated with brominated flame retardants — fire safety without the toxic smoke trade-off.
Note: the treatment does need to be reapplied after ordinary washing — we believe in giving customers the full picture, not just the highlights.
