Sapphire Flame Retardant is a locally manufactured, water-based solution that is completely halogen-free, meaning it contains zero bromine, chlorine, or fluorine. In contrast, standard brominated flame retardants (BFRs) rely heavily on chemically releasing bromine atoms to disrupt fires but have been widely linked to bioaccumulation, toxicity, and environmental harm.

Toxicity and Environmental Impact: BFRs are known to produce hazardous, toxic byproducts (such as dioxins and furans) during a fire and have been phased out due to health concerns. Sapphire is non-toxic and produces no dangerous emissions or thick toxic smoke.

Sapphire Flame Retardant has been successfully tested according to SANS 10177 Part 9 and meets BS 5852 Part 2 and EN 13 501-1: Small-scale burning characteristics of building materials: ignition flame (not just a smoulder/cigarette burn test), flame spread and heat contribution. “Fire testing of materials, components and elements used in buildings.”without triggering halogen-related environmental bans.
