The company is widely recognized for producing proprietary, halogen-free, non-toxic flame retardants designed to prevent materials from catching fire and to stop the rapid spread of flames.Sapphire Flame Retardant stops natural and synthetic materials from actively catching fire or propagating open flames. It works by causing the treated surface to char without smouldering, which builds an immediate fire barrier and prevents the flames from spreading and gives off minimal smoke.

Over 50 Years of Proven Fire Protection

Sapphire Flame Retardant's effectiveness was first independently verified in 1973, when the National Building Research Institute of the CSIR tested our formulation against untreated textiles and foam. Their findings were clear: treated materials were considerably more resistant to flame spread, showing only localised charring — not sustained burning — even under direct, prolonged flame exposure.

Fifty years later, our formulation remains unchanged — and the results still hold. Independent testing by Firelab, based on the same CSIR campus in Pretoria, has confirmed this same fire-retardant performance under the current SANS 10177 – Part 9 protocol, on both treated fabric and timber.

That's five decades of consistent, independently verified performance — not a marketing claim, but a documented track record spanning two generations of South African fire science.

A note on care: flame retardant treatment is removed by ordinary washing, though it withstands dry-cleaning well. We recommend retreatment after laundering to maintain full protection — our team can advise on the right retreatment schedule for your application.
