An accidental fire doesn't stop after 12 seconds.
Yet that's the benchmark most flame retardants are tested and timed to. A brief flicker, a quick self-extinguish call, and the test ends there.
Real fires don't care about that timeline. A dropped cigarette, a candle too close to a curtain, a spark near upholstery — these don't politely stop burning at the 12-second mark.
That's why we test Sapphire Flame Retardant against a longer, more demanding standard — and it holds up:
Cotton fabric (240 gsm) treated with Sapphire Flame Retardant tested for overalls used by SA Navy and for curtains installed in nuclear power plant:
• SANS 10177-9: Small-scale burning characteristics of building materials: ignition flame (not just a smoulder/cigarette burn test), flame spread and heat contribution, a full 10 minute duration.
• Self-extinguished within 24 seconds of flame removal — double the industry norm
• Zero flame spread
• Damage contained to just 250mm, localized to the flame contact area
• Heat contribution of only 0.63°C/min over a full 10-minute exposure
And this isn't a one-off result. The same performance held up in independent testing decades apart — 1973 and today.
As a halogen free chemistry, Sapphire Flame Retardant delivers this protection without the toxic combustion byproducts that come with older brominated treatments.
Note: reapplication is needed after ordinary washing — we believe in giving customers the full picture, not just the highlights.
